About the directors of Casey Eye Institute’s International Ophthalmology Program
Devin Gattey, M.D., is a former Peace Corps volunteer who served in Nepal from 1987-1988. As Director of the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Division at the Casey Eye Institute, he has performed thousands of cataract surgeries in Portland and around the world. Dr. Gattey serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hawaiian Eye Foundation, volunteers as an Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, and works on educational committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His passion is to teach ophthalmology students in developing countries and in Oregon how to provide high quality eye care with compassion, efficiency, and superior technique.
Kevin Winthrop, M.D., M.P.H., is a former public health official from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He is a specialist in public health care delivery, tropical and infectious diseases, and epidemiological research. He has worked closely with CDC, the Carter Center, and other agencies within the River Blindness (Onchocerciasis) elimination campaign in Latin America. He has created the Vision 2020 Latin American fellowship at CEI and works closely with Latin American Vision 2020 program’s training and research consortium. At CEI, he provides clinical and epidemiologic expertise with ocular tuberculosis, syphilis, and other ocular infectious diseases, and teaches in OHSU’s Public Health graduate program.
