Support Services

We have a variety of services to support you and your family through your head and neck cancer treatment and recovery. Our support services include:

Social Services

We have licensed clinical cancer social workers on staff to assist you with your emotional health during treatment. They are trained to provide support, resources, and guidance specific to patients with cancer. Our social workers can also help you and your family utilize community resources such as medical, educational, financial, and mental health agencies.

Palliative Care

The palliative medicine goal is to help you and your family with the physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues of cancer and cancer treatment. We want to help you be as comfortable as possible, and have the best quality of life at every stage of your illness.

The Supportive Oncology and Palliative Medicine clinic can provide:

  • Expert treatment of symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, nausea, trouble sleeping, appetite loss, and constipation.
  • Help making difficult decisions or understanding your condition or prognosis.
  • Emotional and practical support for patients and caregivers.

Speech Pathology

The NW Clinic for Voice & Swallowing is part of OHSU and a leading regional center for voice care, swallowing problems, vocal treatment, research and training. The speech pathology team provides coordinated care from the time of surgery through follow-up in order to achieve the best voice, speech, and swallowing outcomes. Learn more.

Support Groups and Classes

A good source of support can make a tremendous difference when you or someone you care about is going through or recovering from cancer treatment. You may find comfort in talking with others who are having a similar experience or sharing helpful resources and information with others. OHSU Knight Cancer Institute provides access to cancer support groups, patient education, patient advocacy, and support classes. Learn more.

Outpatient laboratory

OHSU offers a comfortable settings on the South Waterfront and Marquam Hill for you while our laboratory technicians process the diagnostic tests you may need.

Pre-operative services

Most surgical procedures will require you to meet with the pre-operative medicine clinic to:

  • Evaluate you and to ensure you are able to go under general anesthesia without complications.
  • Meet with a Nurse Practitioner to go over your health history and do some basic testing.

Your physician’s office will help you schedule this appointment.
