Treatment Options for Epilepsy

Your doctor will decide on the best treatment for your epilepsy and seizures based on:

  • Your age, health and medical history
  • Type of seizure
  • How often you have seizures
  • How well specific medications and treatments work for you
  • Whether your doctor expects your epilepsy to get better, worse or stay the same
  • Your opinion or preference
The goal of treatment is to control, stop or decrease the number of seizures to help you continue doing normal activities. Your doctor and epilepsy team want to:
  • Find out what type of seizures you have
  • Give you the best medication for your type of seizure
  • Use the least medication needed to control your seizures
  • Make sure you have the right medication level all the time
