Radiation therapy is a form of treatment for cancer and other conditions. It uses high-energy X-rays, electrons or both. A machine directs the energy to the precise area in your body where it is needed. The purpose is to destroy cancer cells (tumor) in that area.
Here at the OHSU Brain Institute, we use the most advanced technology available anywhere for radiation therapy, including state-of-the-art Varian linear accelerators and the Novalis TX™ Radiosurgery system with BrainLAB technology.
The Novalis Tx system is one of the most advanced cancer treatments available. It uses a radiation beam that rotates around you. It can send energy to any area in your body from almost any direction.
Because the Novalis Tx system is so precise, your doctor can be confident it sends the right dose of radiation to your tumor while avoiding healthy tissue. The focused beam can even adapt to small movements like breathing. This helps it stay focused on the tumor.
Other radiosurgery systems use a circular beam. Most tumors have an irregular shape, so the circular beam cannot cover them completely. These radiation treatments are not as precise.
Novalis TX radiosurgery is used to treat brain, spine and other cancers.
Brain tumors treated with Novalis TX include:
- Skull base meningiomas
- Brain tumors in children
- Brain cancer that has recurred (come back) after treatment
- Other types of cancer that have spread to the brain
