Treatment Options for Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's is a complex disease and there is no single treatment to prevent or cure it. Current treatments focus on several different areas, including:

  • Helping people maintain mental function.
  • Managing behavioral symptoms.
  • Slowing the advance of the disease.
Managing behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer's
Scientists are studying the underlying disease process and making progress in understanding and identifying ways to prevent or delay the disease. Interventions other than medication include:
  • Treatments for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
  • Cognitive (thinking) training.
  • Changes in diet and physical activity.
