FAQ
Q. I keep hearing about Integrity and compliance, what are they?
A. Compliance is a component of Integrity. Compliance refers to the obligation of OHSU and its employees to follow federal and state laws, rules and regulations as well as OHSU and OHSU Healthcare policies and procedures. Integrity is acting with fair and ethical business practices.
Integrity is doing the right thing.
Q. Does Medicare require that an Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) be completed for non-covered outpatient services?
A. Medicare does not require an ABN for non-covered services. ABNs are required for services that do not meet medical necessity. Non-covered services are items and services which are excluded from Medicare coverage by law. Some examples of services and items that are not covered by Medicare are:
- Acupuncture
- Routine dental services
- Cosmetic surgery
- Routine hearing examinations
- Hearing aids
- Most prescription drugs
- Eye refractions
- Routine physical examinations
It is the patient's responsibility to know what services are non-covered by Medicare. However, patients may have questions, so it is important for the appropriate outpatient staff to know what services are non-covered.
Q. Can Physicians treat family members or themselves at OHSU?
OHSU does not allow Providers to treat members of their immediate families. Please see policy: Adm 07.04
