Spiritual Support

OHSU Chaplaincy Services provides spiritual support to patients, their families and OHSU staff. We provide spiritual guidance, prayer, emotional support and comfort, and help ensure that the spiritual needs of you, your family and your loved ones are addressed during your hospital visit.

When should I call a chaplain?

Facing a challenging or life-threatening medical diagnosis or treatment can lead to deep spiritual inquiry or desire for spiritual support. If you or a loved one confronts such circumstances, you may find comfort in speaking with a chaplain. Chaplains can help you:
  • Share and sort confused emotions and fears.
  • Receive prayer support and nonjudgmental guidance.
  • Learn more about appropriate OHSU resources as well as local faith and religious community resources.

How do I contact a chaplain?

If you would like a visit from a chaplain, your nurse can contact one for you. You also may contact Chaplaincy Services yourself by calling the offices (see contact information at right).
  • During Rounds: Chaplains often make rounds as a means of establishing contact with patients and their families. Feel free to speak with a chaplain then.
  • Leave a Message: Chaplains respond to visitation requests and emergency situations, so they may not be available when you call. Leave a message and a chaplain will get back to you as soon as possible.
  • After Hours: If you have an after-hours emergency need for spiritual support, please ask a hospital staff member to page the on-call chaplain.
