Biography

Dr. Sheppard has a focused clinical interest in surgical diseases of the pancreas with a special interest in the care of patients with pancreatic cancer. In addition he maintains expertise in the surgical care of disease of the foregut (stomach and esophagus) and endocrine diseases of the pancreas and the adrenal gland. Whenever possible, Dr. Sheppard utilizes his expertise in MIS for surgical care. Dr. Sheppard is deeply committed to patient safety and the enhancement of the quality of surgical care and is a member of quality care working groups both at OHSU and for the state of Oregon. His research interests are focused on improving outcomes for pancreatic cancer by earlier diagnosis and improved therapy, the enhancement of outcomes in gastro-intestinal (GI) and GI endocrine surgery and the optimization of MIS techniques. He is a member of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, the surgical principal investigator for OHSU of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group and a member of the Southwest Oncology Group. This provides for excellent state of the art interdisciplinary cancer care through clinical trials. In addition he is a member of national and international scientific societies dedicated to progress in patient care for open and MIS GI surgery.
