Biography
Dr. Schipper's surgical practice encompasses all aspects of general thoracic surgery, with particular interest in lung and esophageal cancer, emphysema surgery and minimally invasive thoracic surgical techniques. Specific techniques include thoracoscopic lobectomy, endobronchial ultrasound and biopsy, surgery for hyperhidrosis, surgery for thoracic outlet syndromes, complex chest wall resection and reconstruction, minimally invasive resection of mediastinal tumors, transcervical thymectomy for myasthenia gravis and procedures for pleural effusions, including pleurodesis and Pleurx catheter placement. As an educator, Dr. Schipper teaches cardiothoracic, pulmonary, laparoscopic and critical-care fellows, general surgery oncology, anesthesia, radiation oncology and medicine residents, medical and physician assistant students and critical care and staff nurses. His primary teaching environments are the patient's bedside, hospital ward and operating room. He is the program director for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited thoracic surgery residency program at OHSU.
