Dr. Sack earned his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1968. He then completed a one-year internship at Mary Hitchcock Hospital (Dartmouth Medical School), followed by training in psychiatry at Stanford Medical Center. Dr. Sack joined OHSU faculty in 1977, and from 1980 to 2002 he collaborated with Alfred Lewy, M.D., Ph.D., conducting research on the relationships between circadian rhythms, light, melatonin and sleep. In parallel with his research activities, Dr. Sack developed the OHSU Clinical Sleep Disorders Medicine Program, and continues to serve as its Medical Director. In 1990, he was certified by the Board of Sleep Disorders Medicine.
