Karen Saks was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and grew up in Los Angeles.  She received a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.  While at UCSB, Karen completed an honors research project studying the genome assembly of the protozoan Tetrahymena, which she published and presented in two research colloquiums.  She also worked as an emergency department scribe at Santa Barbara’s Cottage Hospital and studied Spanish language and culture abroad in Barcelona.  After graduating, Karen traveled through Southeast Asia and South America with her boyfriend, Kyle, served as a translator for a medical mission in Guaymas, Mexico, and continued her work as a scribe at Cottage Hospital.  A love for Israel and a desire to be with her family and friends brought Karen back to her roots to study medicine at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler School of Medicine.  While at Sackler, Karen volunteered with Physicians for Human Rights in several general medicine and women’s health clinics in the West Bank. She comes to OHSU with an open mind and an open heart with regard to deciding her ultimate career goals.  When she’s not studying medicine, Karen enjoys traveling, hiking, camping, running, reading, and cooking.
