Marc Kurtzman was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. After high school, he attended the University of Florida where he enrolled in a combined BA?MA program in Religious Studies. His field of study in religion was integral philosophy and contemplative practices. He conducted interdisciplinary research for his Master’s thesis, utilizing fMRI to assess neurological differences to emotional stimuli in meditation practitioners. It was during graduate school that he discovered his interest in pursuing medicine while working with stroke patients as a data analyst in an fMRI lab. After completing his prerequisites, Marc attended the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. While in medical school, he founded the college’s GLBT & Allies Medical Student Association, which made fundamental changes to curriculum, admissions, and overall atmosphere of the medical campus with regard to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals. His current career interest is Cardiology, with a future goal of academic medicine in order to continue his passion for teaching.
