Carl was born and raised in rural northeastern South Dakota. He attended Augustana College is Sioux Falls, SD where he received a bachelor's degree in biology. Following college, Carl spent time teaching English, studying Spanish and traveling through Nicaragua, and then later in Spain. After returning to the US, he served in an AmeriCorps position in Washington, DC at Bread for the City - a non-profit medical clinic and social service center serving uninsured and low-income populations in DC.Carl returned to his home state and received his medical degree from the University of South Dakota. The specialty of family medicine was a natural choice after growing up in a rural state with a strong tradition of comprehensive family medicine for all stages of life - children and adults, mothers and newborns and a scope of practice that encompassed care in the clinic, the ER and hospital, or even the OR. He also witnessed strong commitment by family medicine physicians for the health of the communities which they served. Carl chose OHSU Family Medicine Residency because of their understanding of and commitment to such full-spectrum, community-centered primary medical care and their efforts to continually improve the care they provide for their patients. Not surprisingly, as a physician provider, Carl's interests are broad: full-spectrum family medicine for all ages and stages of life, public health, primary care sports medicine, and wilderness medicine.Away from work, he enjoys outdoor recreation - hiking, biking, camping, skiing. He also enjoys sports - both as a participant and spectator, traveling and experiencing new cultures, movies and music, and good food and beer. He is happy to be living in Portland at the intersection of many of his interests.
