Academic and Clinical Position



Dr. Kenneth R. Abbey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. He serves on the OHSU Institutional Ethics Committee and is a member of the liver transplant team. Born in Michigan, Dr. Abbey is a graduate of Northwestern University, Harvard Law School, and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He obtained his residency training in anesthesiology at the University of Michigan where he was Chief Resident and has been on staff at OHSU since 2005. He is board certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Abbey’s practice focuses on complex adult anesthesiology including liver transplantation and resection, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and major general surgery cases. His research interests include clinical outcomes in perioperative medicine as well as ethics. He is the Principal Investigator for the OHSU Perioperative Database, a large research database containing data acquired via OHSU’s anesthesia information management system. Dr. Abbey also plays a primary role in OHSU’s membership in the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group in which many of the nation’s leading academic medical centers share electronically acquired data of perioperative patient care for purposes of conducting research to improve the safety and quality of anesthesia. Dr. Abbey teaches at all levels of medical education and training and lectures to medical students, residents, and fellows. He also speaks at institutions and conferences across the United States on medical and medicolegal topics.
