Daniel O. Herzig, MD

Dr. Herzig earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and completed his surgical residency at Brown Medical School. At Brown, he won over a dozen awards for excellence in teaching, patient care and research, including the Outstanding Resident Physician award in his last year. He went on to complete advanced training in colon and rectal surgery, including minimally invasive surgery and endoscopy, at the University of Texas, Houston. Dr. Herzig is board certified in Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Dr. Herzig joined the faculty at OHSU in 2005. He is part of the OHSU Digestive Health Center and the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. He specializes in the treatment of both cancerous and noncancerous diseases of the colon and rectum. Dr. Herzig is committed to providing the highest quality personal service to each individual. Because of this, he has been recognized as one of Portland's "Top Doctors" and has been named as one of "America's Top Surgeons".

Noncancerous (benign) diseases include the treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal fistulae, diverticulitis, and rectal prolapse. In the treatment of benign diseases, Dr. Herzig treats each patient individually, working together to find the appropriate treatment for each person's symptoms. Often this can be done with non-operative and office treatments.

Cancerous diseases include colon and rectal cancer and anal cancer. These are potentially curable cancers for many, if not most, people who are affected. Individual care is provided for each person. Whether as an initial visit or as a second opinion after seeing another provider, Dr. Herzig will make sure each person understands their cancer and all the treatment options. While surgery remains the cornerstone of curing colorectal cancer, colorectal cancer care at OHSU comes from a team of people to address the complex nature of this problem, including of some of the country's best physicians in this field. In our multidisciplinary clinic, we bring together all of the experts needed in one place at one time. Patients can see their surgeon as well as an oncologist, nutritionist, geneticist, or radiation specialist all in one visit. Care is coordinated so that each individual receives the optimal, state-of-the-art approach. Clinical trials are available, if desired, for many patients with colorectal cancer.

Dr. Herzig's research interests include colorectal surgery outcomes and hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes. He has started the states first Colorectal Cancer Registry and collaborated with other researchers at OHSU to continue this institutions leadership in colorectal cancer research.
