Biography

Dr. William Byrne was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio.  He received a BA degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1968 and an MD degree from the Ohio State University in 1972.  After completing a residency in Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at UCLA, he spent 3 years on the faculty before moving to the University of Arkansas in Little Rock where he became Chief of Pediatric GI.  In 1981 he moved on to the University of Michigan and started the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the CS Mott Children's Hospital.  From Michigan it was back to California where he spent 20 years at Oakland Children's Hospital, first starting the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and then for 10 years serving as the Medical Director and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs.  In 2003 Dr. Byrne stepped down and returned to what he enjoys most about medicine, seeing patients and teaching.

He is the author of over 80 publications and and has served in leadership capacities in multiple professional organizations and honorary societies.  His current interests outside of clinical medicine include advocating for children's issues and healthcare financing.  In his free time he and his wife enjoy international travel, camping and backpacking, photography and good food.
