Ventilator Associated Pneumonia
What is a Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)?
Patients with mechanically-assisted ventilation have a high risk of developing healthcare-associated pneumonia. Acquiring pneumonia in a healthcare facility can be serious for the patient, and preventing ventilator associated pneumonia is a priority at OHSU.
VAP Surveillance
The Department of Infection Prevention & Control performs VAP surveillance on the adult and pediatric ICUS. Physicians will notify the department if they suspect a ventilated patient has develop a VAP, and the Infection Preventionist will review the chart to determine if the patient meets the CDC's NHSN VAP definition.
