WHO 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene

Good hand hygiene has always been an important part of patient care at OHSU.  Now staff are being trained in the WHO 5 moments for hand hygiene in the healthcare setting.  Healthcare workers are expected to clean their hands, either with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, anytime these events occur within the course of providing care patients.  These events are:

  1. Before patient contact
  2. Before aseptic task
  3. After body fluid exposure risk
  4. After patient contact
  5. After contact with patient surroundings

Hand Hygiene Compliance Monitoring

OHSU has been monitoring hand hygiene compliance for several years to meet regulatory requirements and for quality purposes.  We have been using a paper based observation tool that tracks compliance for before and after patient contact only.  Now with the emphasis on the WHO 5 moments, OHSU is transitioning to using the iScrub app (available for iPhones and iPod touches) for compliance monitoring.  Compliance data is available for all staff to view using the Statit reporting tool.

You must be logged into an OHSU networked computer to view the data.
