The Graduate Program in Nurse-Midwifery
The Nurse-Midwifery (NM) program of study has been designed to offer a combination of graduate core courses, advanced practice core and NM specialty courses. This combination prepares our students for practice in the field and simultaneously provides a framework for clinical leadership and policy that is critical for any midwife in practice.
Students in this program are eligible for certification after completing two years and receiving the master of nursing degree. They may also elect to complete an additional year of education and receive the doctor of nursing practice degree. Either option offers a practice-focused curriculum that will support the career trajectory for those pursuing expert clinical practice and leadership as a certified Nurse-Midwife.
What You Will Study and Learn
The Nurse-Midwifery program at OHSU prepares students to meet the unique health care needs of women. Nurse-Midwives provide primary and gynecologic care to women as well as specialty care and support for expecting mothers and their infants. In addition to the reproductive science, students examine the influences of culture; tradition and the social, economic and political forces that influence the health of women. The program strives to prepare compassionate, skilled clinician-scholars willing to address issues that affect the lives of women. The faculty have three priorities for their graduates: a scientific basis for clinical practice, clinical competence, and a perspective that views a woman in the context of her family. All faculty in the program participate in a faculty practice, which serves as a primary learning site for students. Other clinical opportunities are provided in community health centers, health maintenance organizations, migrant health clinics, and private practices. Students receive more than 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice in the program.
The Nurse-Midwifery program offers strong clinical experience with a focus on evidence-based practice.
