Health Systems & Organizational Leadership
The Health Systems and Organizational Leadership program prepares nurses for roles in a variety of organizational settings from acute care, to long term care, community care, and beyond. Skills gained will allow nurses to lead in formal executive and front-line positions, quality improvement, project management, or other positions where systems-level management and leadership is needed. Nurses will learn about complex dynamic health care delivery systems, creating sustainable organizations, how to leverage the legislative and regulatory environment, and steward financial and human resources through effective care delivery models. Complexity and Quality science will be a central program focus.
Students study alongside world-class faculty with expertise in complexity and quality science, systems innovations, and outcome data analysis. Students will be paired with faculty in leadership positions as they develop skills in leadership, team building, and sustaining, analysis of system wide initiatives and data based decision making. The program will provide opportunities for interprofessional education, collaboration, and practice. The OHSU curriculum is based on the national competencies for American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing, and the ANA standards for Nursing Administration. The Health Systems & Organizational Leadership program is available statewide in Oregon and beyond. OHSU uses distance friendly, technology enhanced methods to bring the program to all areas of the state. Courses are delivered using a combination of “intensives” and technology specifically designed for distance education.
Program Objectives
Graduates of the Health Systems & Organizational Leadership Program are prepared to:1. Apply advanced knowledge of nursing and health systems theories to positively impact organizational, care delivery and policy outcomes at a population level.
2. Integrate nursing and health systems knowledge in leading and advocating for the design, implementation, and improvement of sustainable person-center practice models.
3. Maximize the use of human capital to impact clinical care, quality outcomes, and evidence-based policies within complex adaptive health systems.
4. Use information, quality science, and knowledge management tools to make sound and ethical decisions that advance interprofessional and collaborative health services practice.
Applying to the Program
Applicants with a bachelor degree in nursing are able to apply. Students who are applying to the HSOL program in 2012 will have a summer start date. Applications for Summer 2012 are currently available online!Admission Requirements
Post-Baccalaureate applicants must have the following:- Bachelor's degree with a competitive grade point average
- Applicants must hold or be currently eligible for an unencumbered RN license in any state
- Must have successfully passed a basic statistics course with a grade of "C" or better within five years prior to entry into the Post-Baccalaureate to Masters or Doctor of Nursing Practice
- Three letters of reference
- Vitae or resume
- Submit a scholarly work sample. This can include a professional work sample that is evidence based, with citations and references, an article you have authored (and if co-authored highlight the sections that you contributed to) or, a paper from your undergraduate program that synthesizes evidence, using citations and references (this should not be a reflection type paper). If you do not have this type of work to submit, please let us know, we can arrange for you to write an article analysis in response to an article that we provide to you.
