General Information
The 13th Annual Northwest Nursing & Health Professionals Education Institute will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 through Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at OHSU School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon. The theme is “Back to the Future: Teaching and Learning in the Digital Age.” The Institute highlights the interface between technology and education, and is designed to provide cutting edge information for nurse and health professions educators in academic and clinical settings. We welcome our distinguished keynote speaker, Diane J. Skiba, PhD, FAAN, FACMI, Professor, University of Colorado College of Nursing, Aurora, CO. Diane is a renowned informatics expert.
Plenary session and concurrent session content will include: emerging technology challenges in health provider education, the dynamics of learning in the digital age, improving teaching within generational differences and cultural diversity, how and when to use “bells and whistles” in the classroom, adapting the OCNE curricular model to the clinical setting, the power of rubrics in clinical settings, assessing competencies and learning using simulation, fostering a culture of innovation and digital wisdom in the education of nurses and health professionals, simulated code interprofessional team training, instructional design considerations in building online courses, and strategies for preparing nursing students and nurses to use the electronic health record. The Technology Buffet on Tuesday afternoon will explore the use of Prezi, Second Life, discussion boards, use of social media in education, webinars and hand-held devices.
As always, the conference will provide hands-on sessions on a wide variety of topics for educators in clinical agencies and in academia, with a focus on the partnership between practice and education. Please see the conference schedule for the session topics, descriptions and faculty.

OHSU matriculated and non-matriculated graduate students can earn 3 course credits for NURS 507I / NURS 607I Selected Topics in Nursing Education. The course faculty is Kathie Lasater, RN, EdD
Course description: This course is offered in conjunction with the annual Northwest Nursing Education Institute (NWNEI). It provides students with the opportunity for in-depth exploration of topics selected for the Institute. Students attend sessions during the Institute, supplemented with face-to-face, online seminar and independent examination of the research literature related to a selected topic. (Note: Students must attend the entire NWNEI as part of the course hours. Students complete the course requirements during summer 2011 term.)

The registration fees for the 13th Annual Northwest Nursing Education Institute are:
Entire Conference:
Early Bird: Registered on or before May 30, 2011 $325
Regular: Registered on or after May 31, 2011 $350
Daily (Single Day Attendance):

* Matriculated students enrolled in summer term for 9 or more credits will:
1. Complete the registration form and submit a fee of $125 to the OHSU School of Nursing CE office; and
2. Register with the OHSU Registrar’s Office for NURS 507I or NURS 607I “Selected Topics in Nursing Education.”
All registration fees include: materials; and refreshment breaks and lunch on Monday and Tuesday. You can purchase parking with your conference registration at the rates shown above. Early registration is encouraged. Enrollment for some sessions may be limited due to room size.

Hotel Accommodations and Ground Transportation
A block of rooms is being held at the Marriott Residence Inn Portland Downtown/River Place, 2115 SW River Parkway, Portland, OR 97201. Please call 503-552-9500 to make a reservation. Be sure to ask for the OHSU School of Nursing Room Block when making your reservation. The deadline for making reservations is Friday, May 20, 2011.
The OHSU rate is $161 plus 12.5%. The rate includes a complimentary free breakfast and afternoon reception, and free wireless. The hotel has complimentary shuttle transportation to and from OHSU. Parking costs $24/day.
