Although I come from a family of nurses, it was not my initial desire to follow suit. After having experiences working as a health educator both locally and with the US Peace Corps, I was led to pursue a career in nursing. I cannot imagine doing anything else. I have been a nurse for 15 years. It has been such a privilege to be part of the lives of patients and their families as they work through the challenges that face each of them. I have spent my career as an adult oncology nurse working on an inpatient unit as well as in an oncology/bone marrow transplant clinic. As an oncology nurse, I developed a passion for end-of-life care and spent several years working as a case manager for a local home hospice agency. These have truly been my most challenging and rewarding experiences as a nurse. Recently I participated in the ELNEC (End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium) training course to deepen my knowledge and understanding of the complex issues surrounding end-of-life care. It is my hope to share some of this knowledge with students as they learn to care for patients at end-of-life. As well as working as a clinical instructor, I continue to provide direct patient care to patients and families pursuing bone marrow transplant in the clinic at the Center for Hematologic Malignancies clinic.
