My passion for Gerontological Nursing began when I became best friends with my grandpa during the last 11 years of his life. He helped me to understand the complexity of issue's someone in their last decade must go through to "survive". My first job as a nurse at Stanford University Hospital was challenging though full of never ending learning opportunities not only in nursing but in life in general. Here I discovered that each person we meet and care for will effect how we experience life forever (in a positive way). As I finished my advanced degree in Gerontology, I moved out of the ICU and my new goal became to help the elderly in the community to recover from surgery, manage their disease and promote healthy choices to prevent the need to go back to the hospital. Being in the home setting, where the client and their family are in control, has many challenges though more rewards. After 12 years at home raising my three kids I am back working Home Health which now includes Hospice. Helping the client and their loved ones through this traumatic phase of life has become an amazing experience for me. My hope is that as a teacher I can inspire new nurses to love Gerontological Nursing and Hospice as much as I do. We need major changes in our way of caring for people, not only to be more efficient but to give better care. Creating nursing leaders, who have the passion, knowledge and confidence has never been more important than now.
