My interests in professional nursing incorporate and support the three missions of OHSU. I value and strive towards the goal of being an expert teacher. I have taught students of different ages in many subjects (biological sciences to nursing sciences) and using a variety of delivery systems (classroom, experiential, online). I believe in the power of "stories" from my 18 years of critical care nursing and 15 years of advanced practice to inform and inspire students. I seek to influence at the national level the education of advanced practice nurses through my involvement on the NONPF Board of Directors.
As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I strive to develop a client-focused plan of care and serve as a health education resource. As a clinician in the university's student health center, I care for the primary and acute care needs of my patients while guiding them towards healthy-living practices. As part of my scholarly work for the advanced practice profession I have written 25 articles for the Drug News column of The Nurse Practitioner Journal. In 2011 I received the Nurse Practitioner State (Oregon) Award for Excellence.
I recently completed a funded research project examining the clinical skills and procedures of nurse practitioners in Oregon. As the Director of the Rural Health Track and recent PI for the HRSA Rural Track Development grant, I seek ways to expand nurses influence in rural health care. My previous research interests focused on the inter-relationships between the environment, the healthcare system, and clients seeking to promote a "Greener" nursing practice.
As a faculty member for the D.N.P. program, I am available as a teacher, mentor, and resource for students. I believe my role is to guide and support graduate students in their educational development. I continue to teach part-time in the undergraduate nursing program on the La Grande campus.
