My research, community involvement and clinical practice revolve around reproductive health issues, particularly for women. My current research study is "Jackson County Educational Latina Health Coalition: A Community-Academic Partnership to Promote Improved Latina Reproductive Health". The purpose of this grant is to support the implementation phase, using community-based participatory research methods, of a community-academic partnership to understand and address reproductive health disparities within the Latina community in rural Jackson County, Oregon.” evolved from the findings of my dissertation research “The Process of Contraceptive Decision Making in Women: Using A Feminist Grounded Theory Approach”. Results from the initial study showed that women valued and desired the help they received from their mothers as they learned about and began to access contraception. In the current study, I am looking at the barriers and facilitators for mothers as they talk to their daughters about preventing pregnancy and plan to use this information to design an intervention to assist parental communication about preventing pregnancy.
My nursing practice for the past twenty years has been rural-based and I am interested in the rural influence on health outcomes and health disparities. Living in Hawaii for eighteen years encouraged my concern for cultural diversity and social justice and I am committed to developing a nursing workforce who can provide expert nursing care to diverse populations.
