Research

The Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is devoted to high quality, relevant, and timely public health-related research.  As declared in the Department's Core Values, our mission to the public is based on the World Health Organization definition of health: complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.  With this in mind, we are committed to providing research and public service in the promotion of health, the prevention and control of illness and injury, and for overall social justice in health.

This broad view has allowed the faculty to pursue research in a diversity of areas utilizing a population-based perspective. We believe that collaboration with others is essential to carrying out our mission, and we rely on a strong collegial commitment to one another in our work relations and intellectual pursuits. The Department embraces the duty of being a voice and presence in the University and the community by promoting the population perspective on health.

Areas of Research

In keeping with the Department's mission, our research has lead to the creation of several institutes and centers with the aim of increasing collaboration, promoting further research, and using evidence-based results to help guide health care policy.
