The Monitoring the Abuse of Drugs project is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse through the Native American Research Centers for Health program.  The project aims to identify and better understand substance abuse patterns in Northwest tribal communities, to increase local capacity to monitor substance use and related consequences, and to assist behavioral health providers in building skills to more effectively treat addictive disorders. This presentation will provide an overview of the project and progress made to date.

Dr. Hawkins is a child clinical psychologist with expertise in addictions and co-occurring disorders.  She has a research background focused on culturally relevant substance abuse prevention and treatment for American Indian/Alaska Natives and is also actively involved with behavioral health policy, clinical program development, and evaluation at the tribal level.  Dr. Hawkins is the Principal Investigator for the Monitoring the Abuse of Drugs project at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board.

*Sponsored by the CDC-funded Prevention Research Center, the Center for Healthy Communities at OHSU, and the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board
