Education Programs

Welcome to the Education Program pages of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. We provide the epidemiology and biostatistics curriculum for the OHSU School of Medicine and for the Oregon MPH Program. Our faculty maintain a broad scope of courses and training opportunities in medicine and public health that cover a large array of methodological and topic-oriented courses.  We are committed to excellence in teaching and our accomplishments have received national recognition in recent years. Our Department's training program in public health and its residency in preventive medicine ranked second in the 2006 US News & World Report graduate school survey; and in 2004, the Department received the 2004 Outstanding Educational Program of the Year Award from the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine.

We offer a CEPH-accredited Master in Public Health degrees in both Epidemiology and Biostatistics, a Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics, an MS in Biostatistics, a PhD in Epidemiology, and an accredited residency program in Preventive Medicine.  We also over specialty training, including summer research training institutes in epidemiology research methods and biostatistics.

The Epidemiology and Biostatistics tracks of the Oregon MPH Program prepare students for a variety of public health careers involving basic and applied research. Courses emphasize the use of quantitative methods for analyzing and addressing health problems.

MD - MPH Joint Degree Program

The MD/MPH joint degree program is part of the Biostatistics & Epidemiology Track of the Oregon MPH Program and is designed for prospective students considering a clinical career in a population-based practice or a career in research, policy, or programs that would be enhanced by a degree in public health.

Master of Science in Biostatistics

The Master of Science degree program at OHSU is designed to provide graduate level training in the application and theory of biostatistics. This training is primarily aimed at those wishing to pursue careers as intermediate level biostatisticians or apply for doctoral programs in Biostatistics. The program is also appropriate for individuals who have earned a Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics and wish to pursue further training.

Graduate Certificate - Biostatistics

This program is designed to provide basic and intermediate graduate level biostatistics training for a diverse range of students in the health sciences. It is primarily aimed at those wishing to become more skilled in applied biostatistics methods and theory.

Preventive Medicine Residency

A fully-accredited residency program in the Department of Public Health & Preventive Medicine at OHSU The mission statement of Preventive Medicine Residency, 'to train physicians in the dynamic and multi-dimensional field of population-based preventive medicine, which incorporated epidemiology, public health, managerial medicine, health policy, research, academic teaching and cross-disciplinary communication.

PhD in Epidemiology

The doctoral degree in epidemiology trains graduates to identify important public health issues that warrant epidemiologic study and conduct independent, scholarly research that advances knowledge about the causes, prevention, and amelioration of human disease. PhD graduates will be prepared to work collaboratively with health professionals in other disciplines on research and applied projects that include epidemiologic elements and to teach graduate students and health professionals in academic, governmental, non-profit, and private sector settings.
