Neuropathology

Neuropathology Services

The division of neuropathology maintains an active diagnostic practice and research activity covering all aspects of neuropathology.

•    Expertise in surgical neuropathology, neurodegenerative diseases, skeletal muscle and nerve pathology, and molecular neuro-oncology
•    ACGME accredited neuropathology fellowship program, with additional training opportunities available for interested medical students and residents

Surgical and Oncologic Neuropathology

  • In-house and consultative services for diagnosis of adult and pediatric neurosurgical specimens
  • An expanding array of immunohistochemical stains, including prognostically relevant brain and pituitary tumor markers
  • In collaboration with the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories, we use sophisticated molecular tests to address the demands of modern brain tumor therapy and meet current practice standards for integrated histological and molecular assessment of brain tumors
  • Available molecular testing includes:
    • MGMT promoter methylation analysis
    • Targeted or next-generation panel DNA sequencing
    • Genome-wide copy number profiling
    • Gene fusion detection by FISH or RNA-based methods
    • Whole exome sequencing
  • Active participation in weekly adult and pediatric multi-disciplinary tumor board meetings to help guide clinical decision-making

Neuromuscular Pathology

  • Specimen processing and diagnostic analysis of skeletal muscle and peripheral nerve specimens from adult and pediatric patients, using histochemical stains, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy as appropriate
    • Common diagnostic inquiries include inflammatory myopathies, dystrophies, metabolic myopathies, drug-induced myopathy, motor neuron diseases, and vasculitis
  • We accept and process specimens from across the state and region
  • Appropriately prepared and shipped fresh samples are critical
  • Analysis of skin biopsies for small fiber neuropathy: please contact our histology laboratory at (503)-494-5755 for information on specimen preparation requirements

Autopsy neuropathology

  • Gross and microscopic examination of central nervous system tissues from hospital autopsy cases, and consultative services for post-mortem evaluation of neurological diseases
  • Expertise in the diagnosis and characterization of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer, Huntington, and Parkinson diseases, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • OHSU and the Oregon Brain Bank maintain a tissue repository for brain research studies, currently with over 3,000 specimens
  • We process postmortem brains for referral to the Nation Prion Disease Surveillance Center
