Deep Brain Stimulation
Dr. Burchiel is a pioneer in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and continues to be a very integral part of growing the therapy and training future key leaders in the area of DBS.

Doctors at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital implanted the device called a Vagal Nerve Stimulator.
The unit, which is placed in the chest, and powered by a battery has to replace every few years with surgery.
Dr. Selden explains that “The seizures are electrical storms in the brain,” and “The impulses [VNS] interrupt these electrical storms.”
