Biography

Dr. Chou is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine, and Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine and Staff Physician in the Internal Medicine Clinic at OHSU. Dr. Chou is also Director of the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center, funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and an Investigator for the Scientific Resource Center of the AHRQ Effective Health Care Program (www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov). Dr. Chou is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and is a member of ACP's Clinical Guidelines Committee. He has been the Director of the American Pain Society (APS) Clinical Practice Guidelines Development Program since 2004. As Director of the APS Clinical Guidelines Program, Dr. Chou led the development of clinical guidelines for the management of low back pain and the use of opioids for non-cancer pain, and is currently working on other practice guidelines for APS. Dr. Chou's other research interests are systematic review methodology, meta-analysis, screening and preventive services, guideline development, and drug effectiveness. As an investigator at the Oregon Evidence-based Practice Center, he has led systematic evidence reviews for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, AHRQ's Effective Health Care Program, and the Drug Effectiveness Review Project. Dr. Chou is on several journal editorial boards and is an author on numerous scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Screening and prevention, including HIV, HBV, and HCV screening, prostate cancer and bladder screening, screening for diabetes, lipid screening, vision screening in children and older adults, oral health screening in children, screening for hearing impairment in older adults, vitamin D screening
  • Evaluation and management of pain, including low back pain, use of opioids, post-operative pain
