Evidence Synthesis and Evidence Based Medicine

Selected Research Projects

United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)
PI: Roger Chou, MD
This project creates scientific evidence reviews of a broad range of health topics for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). These reviews are used by USPSTF to develop recommendations for primary care clinicians and health systems.
Funding Agency: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

VA Evidence-based Synthesis Program
Director:  Devan Kansagara MD, MCR
The VA Evidence-based Synthesis Program (ESP) was established to provide timely and accurate syntheses of targeted healthcare topics of particular importance to clinicians, managers and policymakers, as they work to improve the health and healthcare of Veterans. For more information, see http://www.hsrd.research.va.gov/publications/esp/ or to obtain copies of evidence reports go to http://www.hsrd.research.va.gov/publications/esp/reports.cfm

Medicaid Evidence-based Decisions (MED) Project
PI: Mark Gibson
OHSU GIM Co-Investigator: Martha Gerrity, MD, MPH, PhD
Funding: Center for Evidence-based Policy This project is a collaborative effort among 12 state Medicaid programs to enhance their use of research evidence in their policy decisions. The staff assists the states in identifying and refining topics where an evidence summary would inform policy making, produces evidence summaries on these topics, and provides support to states for urgent issues that require a rapid review of evidence and assistance with collaboration across states.

Evidence-informed Health Policy (EiHP) Workshops
Project PI: Mark Gibson
OHSU GIM Co-Investigator: Martha Gerrity, MD, MPH, PhD
Partnering Organization and Funding: Milbank Memorial Fund
This project is a collaborative effort between the Center for Evidence-based Policy at OHSU and the Milbank Memorial Fund that provides state policymakers with training in the knowledge, skills, and resource to facilitate the use of evidence in policymaking.

American Pain Society Clinical Guideline Project (APS)
Director: Roger Chou, MD
In collaboration with the American Pain Society (APS) and multidisciplinary expert panels, this project creates evidence reviews and clinical practice guidelines to be used by patients, payers, and providers for the management of complex pain problems.
Funding agency: The American Pain Society
