Robert Taylor Society
An Invitation to Membership
I am pleased to extend to you my personal invitation to become a member of the Robert B. Taylor, M.D. Society. As a tribute to the visionary leadership of Robert B. Taylor, M.D., the Department of Family Medicine at OHSU has created the Taylor Society to honor donors to the Department who provide extraordinary support on a sustaining basis. Gifts from Taylor Society members play a significant role in ensuring the continued excellence of the department by providing the resources needed to keep our education programs strong and competitive. Your membership in the Robert B. Taylor, M.D. Society will help assure the Department's future success and its continued national prominence. When you contribute $500 or more annually to OHSU Family Medicine, you automatically become a member of the Robert B. Taylor MD Society. Taylor Society members are absolutely crucial to our department's mission and to the health of all those we serve. The Society recognizes exceptional donors and honors the second chair of OHSU Family Medicine.
Family Medicine at OHSU
The Department of Family Medicine at OHSU was founded in 1971, shortly after the specialty of family practice was created. Under the direction of our first chairman, Dr. Laurel Case, the Department's objectives were straightforward: create a presence for the new specialty in the School of Medicine and begin a family practice residency at University Hospital. Today under the leadership of our third chairman, Dr. John Sault, the Department has far exceeded these initial goals:- Our 400 plus residency graduates practice in 25 states
- Our faculty has grown to more than 60 professionals educators on two campuses, working with over 300 volunteer physician instructors
- We are now ranked among the top family medicine departments in the nation by US News and World Report
In addition, we care for patients in five family health centers and have established two residency programs. Our outstanding continuing medicine education program, the Merle Penning, MD Lectures in Family Medicine is presented annually.
Robert B. Taylor, MD
Robert B. Taylor attended Bucknell University and Temple University School of Medicine. He interned at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, then spent two years with the U.S.P.H.S.
After a successful 14-year private practice in New York, Dr. Taylor joined the faculty of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Six years later, in 1984, he became the second chair of OHSU's Department of Family Medicine.
During Dr. Taylor's tenure as chair, the department increased from 15 to 40 primary faculty, established three off-campus practice centers in Portland, and began a residency program in southern Oregon. A combined family medicine/preventive medicine residency program began in 1996. Dr. Taylor stepped down as chair in 1998 to focus on teaching and writing.
Dr. Taylor is a charter diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine and a charter fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has written and edited many books and articles, including The Manual of Family Practice and Family Medicine: Principles and Practice, 6th edition.
The Robert B. Taylor, MD Society
Many of the Department's achievements have been made possible by private contributions, and we have created the Robert B. Taylor, MD Society to recognize donors who make a generous, ongoing commitment to our future success. The Society honors the Department's second chairman, who was instrumental in expanding our mission. Gifts from Taylor Society members play a critical role in ensuring that existing initiatives and significant new ones can succeed:
- Clerkship and Observership programs that introduce medical students to family medicine.
- Expansion of our rural residency programs to encourage graduates to enter rural practice
- Exploration of key research questions through department fellowships
- Development of training programs to help family physicians sharpen their skills and acquire new ones
As the Department continues to reach for ambitious goals, significant annual gifts will be crucial. Your membership in the Robert B. Taylor, MD Society will give you the satisfaction of helping to meet these pressing needs by contributing directly to the work of our faculty, to our residents, and to our many excellent programs.
