Testimonials from OHSU Summer interns:

"I enjoyed this internship very much. I think it gave me a better understanding of medical informatics and how statistics is applicable to this field. My mentor was very helpful and gave me direction when needed. Overall I think this internship significantly contributed to furthering my interest in this field. I was already considering getting my master's in medical informatics, but I believe my experience this summer cemented my interest".
- Jamie Slonaker – 2011

"This summer was a great experience. Working with Holly Jimison and the Health Coaching Team made the experience much more enjoyable because they were welcoming and supportive and created a comfortable environment. The summer internship gave me valuable experience and knowledge of the whole research process. Even if you do not know what you want to specialize in, the summer internship will definitely get you interested in Medical Informatics. The staff in the DMICE office also made the process easy. This is an internship I would definitely recommend to anyone interested. Plus, being on the OHSU campus during summer is pretty awesome too."
- Brandon Oshiro, 2010

"The 2009 Summer Research Experience gave me a lot of exposure to research and analysis methods that I had yet to explore. Although I had previously carried out procedural methods that my professors had developed, I personally had never been involved in the process of developing, testing, and establishing them. That was a very challenging and educational experience. And although I knew how to organize my data and make analytical tables and graphs, I was not aware of all the tools that could be used to make my job easier and further validate my study by allowing me to analyze truly randomized samples chosen via a random number generator and utilize the method of systematic randomization. These skills will continue to help me as I continue in my academic and research pursuits."
– Elizabeth Nguyen, 2009

"This internship in particular has strengthen my research skills and tools. I am a stronger researcher with knowledge about how to create, carry, analyze, and present the research. Over the summers I have gain an immense amount of knowledge not just in medical informatics, but in being a better critical thinker. Taking a situation and assessing the options, going on line and efficiently searching for the needed material, learning to send out massive amounts of mail to get survey response, working with the IRB are a few of the many. My summer experience has allowed me to grow in multiple ways. Each so different but important to strengthening my ability to understanding and better yet coming up with solutions for a better health care system."
