FAQ for UBT Certificate Students
Am I limited to taking 24 credit hours and 8 courses, or can I take more?
The grant will provide tuition for the 24.0 credits/8 courses. For the HIM workforce role, the grant will cover the 33.0 credits. Any additional coursework will be the financial responsibility of the student.
Do you have any more information regarding BMI 509 (practicum)? How many hours is this --on average? Is this typically done near the end of the year?
The practicum will be taken in one quarter. Most likely in the 3rd or 4th quarter. Students will be taking a practicum course for 3.0 credits, so plan on spending ~9-12 hours per week on the practicum.
Will the ONC scholarship cover the Intro to programming course?
Unfortunately not, this is a pre-requisite so should be completed prior to beginning the program.
If I was unable to accept for Fall term, could I accept to begin Winter term or would I have to wait until Fall 2011? If I could not begin classes until Fall 2011, would I need to apply again? In other words, is there any way to defer the funding until a later time?
Certificate Students will be allowed to defer admission for one quarter. After one quarter, the student would need to reapply for a funded position. Master’s students will need to reapply for Fall 2011.
FAQ’s for UBT Master’s Students
What is the level of student fee's that will be taken out of the stipend? What will my take home pay be each month so I can determine how much I can afford to pay for an apartment.
No fees or taxes are taken out of the stipend.OHSU does not provide student housing. Consult with your tax advisor on your particular situation . We suggest that you look on Craigslist for housing or contact Portland State University (see attached instructions).
I know that the stipend is $15,000 per year. Will that be paid out monthly – is that school year or physical year? Is it prorated for my last “year” or will I receive the full $15,000?
Your stipend will be paid on a monthly basis, at the end of the month. Your first payment will be pro-rated for September beginning with the last week of September. You will receive each month’s payment at the end of the month. The first year’s stipend is $15,000 divided by 12 months, or $1,250 per month (except for September, which is pro-rated), the stipend for the remaining 6 months is $7,500.
Is the healthcare insurance part of the stipend or in addition to the stipend?
It is in addition to the stipend.

At this stage I know it has been stated that the program will be 1.5 years. Does that mean a target completion date of December 2011 or March 2012?
The 1.5 years = 6 consecutive academic quarters, so Fall 2010, Winter 2011, Spring 2011, Summer 2011, Fall 2011, Winter 2012.
If I get married over the course of the program how much will healthcare cost to add my wife?

Is the orientation on Thursday, September 23, 2010 mandatory?
It is not mandatory but it is extremely informative. I strongly urge you to attend. You will also have the opportunity to obtain your ID badge and parking pass at that time, if you want one.
Your note about UBT-funded students just means we will have to choose one of the 6 specialties that have been mandated correct?
Yes.
I know that it’s been discussed that we'll have opportunities for internships but I haven't seen anything that marked them as mandatory.
The internship is required of all master’s students. All master’s students are required to complete a capstone (BMI 581) in order to graduate. The capstone will consist of approved practical work experience (i.e., an internship) in a healthcare or public health organization or industry setting, periodic progress reports of the work being performed, along with a final write-up. The capstone can be completed over 2 or 3 terms for a total of 6 credits. This program requirement is part of the full-time commitment that funded students are expected to make and agree to when they sign the Intent to Enroll form.
How/What proof will I need to present to show I completed my Anatomy & Physiology class? (It is currently still in progress.)

How will I arrange to schedule my classes for this fall. Will I need to meet with anyone in person initially or am I able to come to campus the first day of classes and start from there?
The master’s curriculum is posted on the ONC page on our website.
