Meet the Director of Educational Technology
Norman A. Cohen, M.D. is the Director of Educational Technology in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR. He also serves as the department's Medical Director for Professional Revenue Performance, the Immediate Past President of the OHSU Faculty Senate, and the Chair of the Managed Care Strategies Committee for OHSU Healthcare.
Born in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Cohen grew up in Nevada and California before attending college and medical school at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland (1978-1985). His post-graduate training included a medical internship at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore (1985-6) and an anesthesiology residency at Duke University (1986-9), where he served as Chief Resident during his CA–3 year.
Dr. Cohen joined the Duke faculty as an Associate before entering private practice in North Carolina in 1990. He subsequently consulted for Anesthesia Partners, Inc., a contract management and staffing firm, which hired him as its first Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Cohen then returned to private practice where he served as chief of anesthesiology at Saint Vincent Healthcare and president of an anesthesia group in Billings, Montana.
In 2003, Dr. Cohen relocated to Oregon, joining the Oregon Anesthesiology Group at their Corvallis site. Dr. Kirsch, a friend of Dr. Cohen's from his time in the anesthesiology research laboratory at Hopkins, recruited Dr. Cohen to OHSU in 2007. His primary academic interests include practice management education for the department's residents and fellows and evaluating evolving technologies for our educational programs. He was co-editor of "Avoiding Common Errors in Anesthesia" with responsibility for the chapters on practice management and has authored numerous other chapters and journal articled.
He has delivered many invited lectures nationally, regionally and as a visiting professor, primarily on healthcare economics and its impact on anesthesiology.
Outside OHSU, Dr. Cohen is a past-president, webmaster and secretary for the Oregon Society of Anesthesiologists, is an alternate delegate representing the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) at the American Medical Association's (AMA) House of Delegates, and has previously served in numerous capacities at the ASA including Delegate and Director from Oregon, Delegate from Montana, Chair of the Committee on Economics, Section Chair for Professional Practice and Vice President for Professional Affairs. At the Oregon Medical Association, Dr. Cohen is a past-member of the Board of Trustees, and, at the AMA, Dr. Cohen served on the Relative Value Update Committee, and chaired its Research Subcommittee. Dr. Cohen won the 2010 Bertram Coffer Award for Excellence in Government from the ASA.
Dr. Cohen lives with his wife of over thirty years. They have one child, who lives in London, England. Dr. Cohen enjoys scuba diving, photography, travel, and computing. He is a commercial and instrument pilot with single-engine land and glider ratings, but is no longer actively flying.
