Nabil Endowment

Dr. Nabil Alkayed and Dr. James Metcalfe

(April 23, 2014) Please join with me in congratulating Dr. Nabil Alkayed, who today became the James Metcalfe Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Research. The endowment is the first formed in the Knight Cardiovascular Institute, and Nabil is the first recipient. Dr. Metcalfe was founder of The Heart Research Laboratory and led cardiovascular research at OHSU for over 30 years until his retirement in early 90s. Nabil was chosen for this huge honor because of his outstanding accomplishments as a scientist in cardiovascular research, his ability to mentor junior residents, fellows and faculty and his consistent accomplishment to facilitate collaboration fostering advancement in cardiovascular research between individuals across different departments and centers.

I have had the great pleasure of working with Nabil for more than 20 years and have enjoyed watching him operationalize his vision for research in our department, as well as for cardiovascular research at OHSU. As was presented at this evening’s dedication, I am consistently impressed by Nabil’s passion, organizational abilities, his in-depth knowledge of physiology and his wonderful skills as a mentor. I am pleased that he will continue in his APOM role as Vice Chair of Research, while he also holds his new Endowed Chair.

Dr. ed kahl is the new director of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)

Ed Kahl

(April 9, 2014) Please join with me in congratulating Dr. Ed Kahl who has accepted to the position of Director of Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) within Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

The Director of Perioperative TEE is a position that has been created in response to the growing utilization of intraoperative TEE by members of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (APOM) as a diagnostic and monitoring modality performed in cardiac anesthetics, as well as for non-cardiac anesthetics. The responsibilities of this position are primarily to support the educational mission of the Adult Cardio-Thoracic Anesthesia Fellowship Program, the core residency, as well as departmental faculty development. Additionally, the Director will serve as the quality expert and faculty mentor for ensuring state-of-art practice and safety for our patients by reinforcing adherence to departmental and institutional policy and American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines and standards.

Brambrink, Ansgar2

I am delighted to share with you very exciting news. The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) gives each year one large award "The Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award (FARA)" to a distinguished Anesthesiologist chosen from all over the world. It is with great pleasure and pride that I announce that the winner of this year's award is Dr. Ansgar Brambrink, whose project "Long-term outcome of single vs triple anesthesia exposure of infant monkeys" was selected for the 2012 Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award. The award recognizes Dr. Brambrink's demonstrated originality, scientific excellence and leadership in the anesthesiology field, and aims to foster innovation and creativity in anesthesia-related research. To quote the society's letter, Dr. Brambrink's proposal was chosen by an international external review panel because of its "superior promise to produce innovative work in our field". The 3-year grant is a huge honor to Dr. Brambrink and a great recognition of our department's stature and Dr. Kirsch's leadership in the field of Anesthesiology both national and internationally.'

Regional Anesthesia - Innovative toolbox to train tomorrow's physicians!

OHSU Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine launches the Regional Anesthesia Curriculum Tool Box Project!  The toolbox project is being piloted through Regional Anesthesia and the education department has plans to roll out this project with other subspecialties.

The goal of the project is to allow anesthesiology residency programs to share peer-reviewed educational resources and tools that will help them implement a competency-based regional anesthesia curriculum.  The tool box includes resources to help assess resident attainment of ACGME competency milestones.
