Program Application Process

Application Requirements

  • M.D., MD/Ph.D., or D.O. from an accredited U.S. institution, or foreign equivalent with ACGM / ECFMG-approved documentation
  • Two years of an ACGME-accredited residency (or written verification from ABMG/ACGME documenting equivalency of foreign training) in a clinical discipline prior to starting the program
  • All other things being equal, we will favor applicants who have completed the full term of another residency program
  • Ability to obtain a limited or full license to practice medicine from the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners
  • Basic courses in eukaryotic/mammalian genetics, e.g. obtained in college, medical school, or graduate school
  • Ability to provide supportive recommendation letters—appropriate educators & mentors
  • A strong, well-founded desire to become a practicing medical geneticist

  • Foreign applicants must also supply:
    • TOEFL certificate (except native English speakers)
    • Certified translations of any certificates or degrees in foreign languages
    • Current visa status and eligibility
    • Other training documentation to establish equivalence to train in the U.S.A.

  • Personal statement
    • One page describing personal interests & training goals in Medical Genetics
  • Official medical school transcript
  • USMLE Transcript
  • COMLEX Transcript
  • ECFMG Status Report (International medical graduates only)
  • Letters of recommendation
    • Two letters (in English) from professional references
    • For M.D.s / D.O.s
    • One letter must be from the director of prior residency program
    • For M.D.s / Ph.D.s
    • One letter must be from their thesis advisor, the director of the graduate program, or from a post-doctoral research fellowship mentor
    • Additional letters from appropriate individuals may be submitted optionally


  • Interviews are conducted from August - October
  • Interviews are granted based upon review of application package
  • Match day is December 1, 2010

Selection and Notification

  • Applicants will be notified of admission by the matching program & followed by correspondence from the Program Director
  • The applicant is required to make a commitment to enroll/decline the position in a reasonable time period
  • The Admissions Committee reserves the right to leave open residency slots unfilled

Application Deadlines

  • Applications accepted till October 31st of the previous year for July 1 openings
    Applications will not be reviewed until all needed materials listed above are received
    Inquiries are encouraged at any time.  Under special circumstances, applicants may be admitted in the middle of the academic year
