Susan HayflickMMG encompasses numerous research faculty, clinicians, fellows, and students with diverse research interests surrounding molecular and medical genetics approaches to understanding the basis and treatment of human disease. Our research includes cancer genetics, molecular genetics, gene therapy technologies, molecular diagnostics, developmental genetics, medical genetics cytogenetics, quantitative trait genetics, biochemical genetics, cell biology and biochemistry. Several laboratories focus on "tumor suppressor" and "oncogene" pathways involved in a variety of common human cancers, with one goal being to capitalize on this knowledge for translational research purposes. One central theme in the program is the utilization of a variety of genetic, molecular and cellular approaches for analyzing normal and disease processes. Fatty Acid Oxidation and Retina

One of the complications of LCHAD deficiency is vision loss because of a degeneration of the retina, a part of the eye that is essential for us to see. This degeneration of the retina is called retinopathy and the cause of retinopathy in children with LCHAD is not known. Dr. Melanie Gillingham is currently conducting a study in cells to investigate the cause of LCHAD retinopathy. Help support Dr. Gillingham's research today!

In the News

Penelope Hogarth BPANDr. Penelope Hogarth hosted the first BPAN Research Meeting worldwide at OHSU June 24-26, 2016. Seventeen families traveled from across the United States to Portland, OR. 

The BPAN Research Meeting included: 

  • research appointments
  • collection of biological samples for future BPAN research
  • motor skills and cognition assessments
  • data collection to determine the natural history of BPAN
  • a mini-symposium where BPAN investigators discussed the past, present, and future of BPAN research 
  • focus groups where family members had an opportunity to inform BPAN researchers of their biggest challenges and concerns
  • social events with families and researchers (plus, a therapy llama and alpaca were in attendance too!) 

More meetings are in the works after the wild success of this inaugural event. Congratulations to all who were involved!
