Environmental Observation and Prediction
Coastal margins are the most densely populated and developed regions in the world, and require science-informed management of resources and ecosystems. Natural catastrophes like recent tsunamis and hurricanes further highlight the need to understand and predict coastal margins. EBS is a pioneer in monitoring, understanding and predicting the physical conditions of natural waters, and a leader in developing coastal-margin observatories that integrate modeling, monitoring and information management techniques. Novel frontiers include the incorporation of chemical and microbial factors in these observatories, and on developing and using new tools--including advanced genomics and proteomics--to understand and protect natural ecosystems as well as the human beings who depend on them.
