Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology faculty in EBS are exploring the frontiers of biological systems. Defining life processes at a molecular scale is the aim of several BMB laboratories. Spectroscopic methods, including optical absorption, fluorescence, resonance Raman, FTIR, circular dichroism (CD), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies (see Bioinorganic Spectroscopy Facilities) are being used to investigate the structure and mechanism of catalysis by enzymes, particularly metalloenzymes. The structure and mechanism of membrane transport systems is also active area of study. The regulation of protein biosynthesis by ribosome stalling and elucidation of cell signaling networks make a crucial bridge between biomolecules and biosystems.
