Information for Microscopy Suite Users

The OHSU FEI Living Lab is a collaborative research program in the OHSU Center for Spatial Systems Biomedicine (OCSSB). Part of its mission is to provide access to a state-of-the-art microscopy suite and develop workflow solutions for integrated light and electron microscopy (EM) applications.   Microscope access and services are available to internal, external, and commercial users.  Training, technical service and specimen preparation services are provided by the OHSU EM Core and FEI, and are tailored to the needs of the user to help them achieve their research goals. The FEI Living Lab instrumentation encompasses the Titan Krios™, the Helios™ Nanolab™ 650 and the Tecnai™ with iCorr™, which augment the EM Core's CM120/Biotwin microscope. Pricing details can be found on our services pricing page.

Specimen preparation services are available for an hourly rate. The services offered range from consultation to assist the user in identifying a sample preparation strategy, to partial or full sample processing. Often, specimen preparation, appropriate to the imaging technique being utilized, will be undertaken by the researcher. Because users represent a wide range of disciplines and subspecialties, the EM Core typically does not provide full specimen processing, but assists in selection of a protocol and guides the user toward a successful method, and will perform processing and/or embedding steps, as necessary. The determination of an effective specimen preparation method, and an exact protocol is a significant component of most microscopy investigations, and typically are refined by coordinated investigator and EM Core staff efforts to optimize the results obtained.

Usage Guidelines:

Initial Access: Prospective users must submit the Project Form to initiate scheduling and access.  The training schedule will depend on the microscope to be used.  Users may not operate the microscope independently until they have been approved by FEI Living Lab staff.

Faculty Responsibility: A faculty member must take responsibility for academic staff and students who use the facility and for any health and safety hazards associated with projects performed in the FEI Living Lab. This includes fiscal responsibility for hourly charges and consumables.

Scheduling: Scheduling will be arranged by FEI Living Lab staff; e-mail to inquire about availability.
