Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility Research Technician

We are seeking a talented, motivated and highly interactive individual to work in a multidisciplinary structural team at OHSU. Included at the OHSU’s EM facility are three TEMs, a Tecnai T12 Biotwin with iCorr, a T12 Spirit Biotwin and a Titan Krios microscope, the latter of which is outfitted with a Falcon II, post GIF K2 and volta phase plate technologies. Soon the facility will also house a TF20 Talos Arctica with autoloader and K2 camera. This core facility also has all standard equipment for sample preparation. The OHSU structural effort is quickly growing at OHSU, and is aided in its mission by strong collaborative ties with FEI and Intel. The candidate will be a crucial part in helping further expand and knit this community together.

The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day running of the facility, general lab maintenance, sample preparation, user training, large-data set acquisition for single particle studies, tomography acquisition, and managing the recharge mechanism including supplies deliveries, scheduling and billing, and facilities infrastructure for the instruments.

The candidate will be expected to help maintain a smooth and efficient working environment by collaborating with internal and external users and assisting with training and support. This includes troubleshooting sample preparations and helping with long semi-automated data collection runs. The candidate will be responsible for the installation and testing of new software for cryo-EM image acquisition and analysis, as well as to the investigation, acquisition and testing of new, microscope-related hardware. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate in weekly EM-related seminars, to teach the theory and practice of electron microscopy, and to collaborate with researchers pursuing TEM-focused research projects. The candidate will support resource development and the development of grant applications for funding of these platforms.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with 5+ years of experience in Cryo-TEM or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated substantial experience utilizing transmission electron microscopes;
  • Strong working knowledge of instrumentation and techniques used in structural biology and biochemistry.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovative procedures quickly.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and time management.
  • Well organized, dependable and work as a team member to accomplish research goals.
  • Proficient in electron microscopy, sample preparation and analysis methodologies.

  • Additional safety training will be required to work with cell lines/ infectious bacteria in a BSL-2 environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in related field with 5+ years of experience in cryo TEM or equivalent.
  • Previous experience using FEI Titan Krios microscope, phase plate and direct electron detectors.

Research Associate (Heiser Lab)

The Heiser Lab is an interdisciplinary research group focused on understanding cancer biology through the use of integrative experimental and computational approaches. A position is now open for a Research Associate with a strong background in computational biology or bioinformatics. The successful applicant will be responsible for analyzing high-throughput molecular profiling data including sequencing and functional assays.

Postdoctoral Scholar (Nan Lab)

The position is for a project focusing on single-molecule and superresolution imaging of oncogenic signaling processes, with a focus on the nanoscopic spatial regulation of Ras GTPases and HER family receptors. The Nan laboratory is equipped with a suite of advanced imaging tools including multispectral superresolution microscopy (MSSRM) and interferometric photoactivated localization microscopy (iPALM). These tools will allow a much more systematic and accurate view of the molecular details that govern the biology of Ras and HER in model cell lines and tissues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in biophysics, biology, (bio)chemistry, bioengineering, or a related scientific field

Postdoctoral Scholar (Beatty Lab)

The OHSU Center for Spatial Systems Biomedicine and the Program in Chemical Biology has an open postdoctoral researcher position in the Beatty Lab. The fellow will conduct research at the interface of chemistry and biology, working collaboratively to develop and optimize novel fluorescent tags for imaging cellular proteins.

The successful applicant will: develop new genetically encoded protein tags for tracking proteins by confocal fluorescence microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, and by electron microscopy (EM).  The applicant will be responsible for designing and validating novel protein tags.  A long term goal of this project will be to elucidate multi-protein interactions by high resolution microscopy.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in chemical biology, protein design, molecular biology (i.e., genetic knock-ins), tissue culture, and microscopy.  The candidate is expected to have enthusiasm for applying new chemical tools towards understanding cell biology.  The candidate should have some experience with bioconjugation reactions and fluorescent probes.  Projects in the Beatty Lab utilize skills in the areas of synthetic chemistry, molecular imaging, cell biology, protein engineering, bioconjugation reactions (e.g., “click chemistry”), biochemistry, and molecular biology. The candidate must be passionate about research, self-sufficient, and goal-oriented.

Research Assistant 2 (Gray Lab)

The Center for Spatial Systems Biomedicine, Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Knight Cancer institute at OHSU has an open research position under direct supervision of Research Associate Professor, Koei Chin, MD, PhD, a molecular cancer biologist with a surgical pathology background in the Joe Gray laboratory. This position will be in a team setting, working closely with members of the Gray, Gibbs and Chang labs.

  • 2 years of experience in histopathology processing and immunofluorescence assays, including imaging on fluorescence microscopy and management of archived digital images for sharing with collaborators and analysis
  • Proficiency in tissue processing for immunofluorescence, antibody engineering and microscope operation
  • Demonstrated experience in cell and molecular biology and biochemistry techniques including cell culture, cell transfection, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blots, FACS
