Patient and Population-Based Survey Data in Research, Policy and Practice

This workshop will review the use of patient and population-based surveys to engage patients and consumers in assessing health status, health care needs and health system performance. The strengths, weaknesses and key methodologic issues to consider in using currently available patient surveys and population-based survey datasets will be reviewed. Research, policy and health practice applications of survey-based data will be highlighted using illustrations from currently available population-based children's health datasets and by system performance measurement and improvement initiatives.
Learning Objectives and Competencies Acquired
1. Learn about the current use and availability of patient and population-based surveys and survey datasets with a focus on use to assess and drive improvements in health care policy and quality of care
2. Identify key steps in developing and testing the reliability and validity of patient and population-based survey
3. Know how to use currently available online data resource centers to explore and consider use of population-based survey data in research
4. Identify opportunities and issues in using patient-driven health and health care quality measurement and improvement tools, including pre-visit preparation websites, Personal Health Records and post-visit surveys.
5. Be prepared to assess the data quality, variable construction, composite measure scoring and analytic strengths and weaknesses of commonly used population-based survey datasets.

Academic credit for HIP Students:
Students enrolled in the Human Investigations Program may enroll for an optional 0.5 Reading and Conference credit or 1 credit with attendance at a journal discussion session (scheduled Friday, Dec. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m.) and successful completion of required assignment. Please indicate in your registration e-mail that you wish to add credit amounts and specify if you will be taking 0.5 credits or 1 credit. Participation is mandatory to receiving credits.
