Spring 2016 Nano Courses
A Nano course refers to a short course, offered for 0.5 credits. They are intended to be special topics courses that capitalize on timely subject matter, visiting expertise, and/or highlight new developments in a field. Flexibility in scheduling and course leadership (i.e. not part of the permanent curriculum) will insure these courses are nimble. Nano courses are only offered once. If a course is deemed to be worth offering regularly, it will go through the regular course review and approval process.
CANB 610NN-0 and CELL 610NN-0: Biology and Pathology of Extracellular Vesicles
Primary faculty: Peter Kurre
This course will discuss the biology of extracellular vesicles as cell-cell signaling devices. Students will be familiarized with differences in vesicle types and biogenesis as well as the diversity of EV cargo and available evidence for their action on target cells with emphasis on their role in the cancer microenvironment. Students will be familiarized with technologies currently used in analysis of EV.
BEHN 610NN-0: Glial Cell Biology
Primary faculty: Marina Guizzetti
This course is designed to provide an overview of the role of the three main glial cell types, namely astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia, during brain development and in the adult brain. Furthermore, the course will describe the involvement of glial cells in neurodevelopmental disorders, neuroinflammation, and traumatic brain injury. The proposed course is appropriate for the NANO format because represents an introduction to a topic that is not generally covered by traditional neuroscience courses.
