How to join the School of Medicine Graduate Faculty

Eligibility for Graduate Faculty Membership:

Any OHSU faculty member or faculty-level scientist, who possesses a Master’s or Doctoral degree who demonstrates evidence of scholarly activity, and is a member of an approved academic graduate degree program within the School of Medicine shall be eligible for membership in the Graduate Faculty. External faculty with involvement at OHSU, are eligible for Affiliate Graduate Faculty Membership. These faculty will have the same privileges and responsibilities as Graduate Faculty, but shall be limited to activities only within the Graduate Program that sponsored them and their term shall be limited to 3 years (although it can be renewed at the Program’s request).

Privileges and Responsibilities of all Graduate Faculty Members:

Graduate Faculty shall teach in graduate level courses, serve on oral thesis or dissertation examination committees and on advancement to candidacy examination committees, will interact with graduate students in seminars and conferences, and serve on other committees concerning graduate education. They may mentor or advise a graduate student on matters concerning their capstone project, thesis or dissertation.

Steps to join the Graduate Faculty:

  1. Find a sponsoring graduate program.
  2. Update and gather your CV and biosketch.
  3. Submit an Application for Appointment to the School of Medicine Graduate Faculty.

Applications are reviewed by Graduate Council on the second Tuesday of each month that the Council is in session.

Proposing a New Course

Graduate Faculty may submit proposals for two types of courses:

1.  NANO courses are intended to capitalize on timely topics and offer flexibility in scheduling/course leadership. Each NANO course proposal must be submitted to Graduate Studies and approved by Graduate Council. Please submit proposals at least 6 weeks prior to start of the intended term.

2.  Regular courses are intended to permanently fill a gap in a graduate program's curriculum as either a core course or an additional elective offering. Each regular course proposal must be submitted to Graduate Studies and approved by Graduate Council. Please submit proposals at least 6 weeks prior to start of the intended term.

Curricular Modifications

The establishment of new academic programs and curriculum modifications calls for various stakeholders to engage in the development, review and approval of the proposal. Per OHSU Policy 02-50-010, Proposing Curricular Modifications, OHSU utilizes three review levels for proposal of curricular changes, depending on whether the proposed change is classified as minor or substantive, as stipulation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
