April is National Preceptor Month

We want to recognize and thank all of our wonderful preceptors for their time, dedication, generosity, and patience in supporting our dietetic interns. Our program would not exist without amazing preceptors whose commitment allows OHSU Dietetic Internship to continue to accept and train future nutrition professionals.

Today, we would like to celebrate and appreciate one particular preceptor: Anne Goetze.

Anne Goetze headshot smallAnne Goetze, RDN, LD, FAND, Senior Director of Nutrition Affairs with the Oregon Dairy & Nutrition Council, has been a preceptor for the Graduate Programs in Human Nutrition for over 25 years!

Due to her long-standing commitment to serving our interns as a preceptor, our program nominated Anne Goetze this year for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition and Dietetics Educators and Preceptors (NDEP) Area 1 Outstanding Preceptor Award. We are happy to share that Anne was recently named the recipient of this award. She will be recognized in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and NDEP-Line, and will be presented with her award at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Boston, MA later this year. She will also receive $1,000 award, sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic's (AND) Foundation, to attend FNCE.

Anne is a leader in the field of nutrition and dietetics throughout Oregon. A short list of her current and past leadership roles, though there are many others not mentioned here, includes: OHSU's GPHN Advisory Council; WIC Program Advisory Board; Oregon SNAP-Ed Stakeholder group;Nutrition Council of Oregon Steering Committee; OAND Awards Committee Chair, Nominating Committee Chair, and Legislative Grassroots Liaison; and Chair for the Oregon Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group in 1997 and 2013.

Anne is an avid preceptor. On average, she precepts 4 interns per year from our Dietetic Internship, in addition to the 4 interns she takes yearly from Oregon State University's Dietetic Internship program.

Sara Wolfe, our Supervised Practice Coordinator, nominated Anne Goetze for this award. A few favorite quotes from her nomination letter stood out:

  • "Anne Goetze is an exemplary preceptor, mentor, and colleague…who has given so much to dietetic interns statewide…with [such] heart, cheer, and support. She is committed to the profession, and to intern development and success…She sees it as her duty and privilege to train future dietitians in the state of Oregon."
  • "She encourages interns to speak up as strong representatives of the profession and expects them to be engaged professionals…behaviors that she models for interns both during rotations, at conferences and events, and in the classroom setting."

Interns speak just as highly of Anne. As part of the nomination process, an intern who rotated with the preceptor was also asked to provide a letter of support. This is how first year Combined MS/DI student, Amanda Wittenberg, ended her letter:

  • "Anne is a natural mentor –she is influential, supportive, trusted, and knowledgeable…Any student that has the opportunity to learn from Anne is a lucky one, as they will leave feeling more confident and excited about their future as a dietitian."

Our congratulations to Anne Goetze! And our heartfelt thanks to all of our extraordinary preceptors! Happy National Preceptors Month!
