Charles Kilo, M.D., MPH, vice president and chief medical officer for OHSU Healthcare, has been appointed to the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Advisory Committee for the Engineering Resource Centers (VERCs). Dr. Kilo holds a joint School of Medicine appointment as assistant professor of medical informatics and clinical epidemiology.
The VERC program mission is to propose, develop, and facilitate deployment of innovative solutions to challenges within VHA healthcare delivery through the integration of systems engineering principles. This mission is accomplished through collaborative partnerships between VA professionals, academic engineering and business schools, national laboratories, and healthcare professional training and research programs.
"We rely on national VA and non-VA leaders such as yourself—with experience in technical, clinical, operational and policy issues—to provide guidance to the program as part of the VERC Advisory Committee," said Heather Woodward-Hagg, Ph.D., acting director for VERCs, in her letter to Dr. Kilo.
In addition to serving as advisors to VERC leadership, Dr. Kilo and committee members will conduct annual reviews of VERCs, with a focus on innovative models of care delivery; engineering tools and methods in health care environments; professional development to share knowledge between health care and engineering professionals; and health systems engineering expertise and guidance. Dr. Kilo will serve a three-year term.
