Eighty-five faculty members honored at annual P&T Reception Share This OHSU Content

PT-reception-fall2012 006Dean Mark Richardson hosted the fourth annual Promotion & Tenure (P&T) Reception Sept. 26 to honor newly promoted faculty members in the School of Medicine. This past year, 85 faculty members were promoted.

"Your talent, expertise and creativity allow OHSU to fulfill our missions," said Dean Richardson. "We are all here to recognize your individual achievements, but we're also here to celebrate together."

In his remarks, Dean Richardson thanked the P&T Committee and emphasized the importance of mentoring in the culture of academic medicine. The faculty members who spoke carried this theme and acknowledged the guidance they received from senior colleagues and mentors in the School of Medicine as influential on their careers.

Robert Shangraw, M.D., professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine and chair of the P&T Committee, opened the program and extended his congratulations to all the faculty members being feted.

Three faculty members were invited to speak about their experiences at OHSU and were introduced by someone in their department. Dr. Shangraw introduced Michael Hutchens, M.D., associate professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. Dr. Hutchens commented on the "continuous encouragement to do better" that he has received from his colleagues, noting especially the influence of Sharon Anderson, M.D., professor of medicine, and Jeffrey Kirsch, M.D., chair of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, on his career. "This is a fantastic place to work and I'm very lucky," he said.

Sue Richards, Ph.D., professor of molecular and medical genetics, introduced Rosalie Sears, Ph.D., professor of molecular and medical genetics. Dr. Sears said Susan Hayflick, M.D., chair, has been a "tremendous mentor," and noted the collegiality and collaboration displayed by everyone at OHSU. In closing, Dr. Sears thanked her lab staff, who were present at the reception, and said they "are like rock stars."

John Hunter, M.D., chair of surgery, introduced Kevin Billingsley, M.D., professor of surgery. He commended Dr. Billingsley for his ability to think about the "big picture" and keep people working together. Upon joining OHSU, Dr. Billingsley said he was "immediately thrilled and almost disoriented at the warmth and collegiality of OHSU...which continues to this day."
