OHSU's executive leaders recently welcomed Marc A. Nivet, Ed.D., chief diversity officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges, to campus. He spoke about diversity as a vital component of health systems innovation and praised the efforts by OHSU leadership to create a culture of inclusion among diverse faculty members and students.
Speaking to an audience at the OHSU Auditorium, Dr. Nivet stressed the importance of creating an environment where diverse groups feel "engaged" in all areas of the institution.
While the work isn't done, he stressed that bringing diversity to academic institutions has come a long way. "We are able to have a conversation now about being diverse," said Dr. Nivet. "Ten years ago this was a difficult conversation."
Dr. Nivet joined the AAMC in June. In this role, he provides strategic vision for all the AAMC's diversity and inclusion activities and leads the association's diversity policy and programs department, which focuses on programs designed to increase diversity in medical education and advance health care equity.
